Time to round up the gang!

It's 2023! I am not the only one that can't believe that came around quickly. I have blinked and the past year has flown by. I now have a toddler that is forever sparking a conversion & is so curious about the world. I have always valued family photos above many things. I want to hold onto each season so tightly but I know they pass, what I can keep is the memories of images throughout my home & albums in my bookshelf.

I thought there is no better time to share some tips when preparing for your family session.

  1. The first thing I would say is choose a photographer that you connect with. The photographer you choose is going to capture intimate moments between your family and being comfortable is so important. Social media is very powerful as we can jump on stories and get a feel for someone almost instantly. I personally like to build a relationship prior to our session. I send out a questionnaire to my clients with questions that help me connect & get to know each family individually. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask questions.
  2. Preparing the kids! I think this is a big one. My tip with children is to get them excited. My style of photography is very candid and intimate. I would explain to the kids that we are going to have an adventure, to explore and to spend some time together. The young ones may not understand but once in the element, the kids love it. They could help with choosing outfits & being involved in the prep.
  3. Don't leave the styling of your session to the week of. I find this can be really stressful for families if they are not organised. I have a range of clothing available in my client wardrobe that you are welcome to wear when you book a session with me. I always suggest choosing a colour palette of around 4 colours and mixing them throughout. I love being involved with styling so please reach out. Your session should be unique to your family, wear what is comfortable.
  4. Go with the flow. I think this is my favourite tip! I know how kids can be, I have photographed hundreds of families. Try and remain calm and in the moment, I am there to help with the kids and my job is to do my very best to be their friend & have them follow my lead. In between what can feel like chaos, is also laughs and smiles that are over in a second.
  5. Make sure everyone in the family is full & has a water bottle handy. If Dad likes to have a beer, bring some of those too. Whatever makes you comfortable and relaxed, do that.
  6. Don't stress about the time of day. I know that most sessions are held at sunrise or sunset, the reason being is that the light is soft & flattering. The middle of the day can be extremely harsh, (yes it can be done and suits certain photographers styles) but for me, I prefer the golden light. When the little ones are out and about exploring, they are having fun! When they are having fun it is a distraction from the fact they would usually be winding down for bed. I photograph at these times of day, with many families every year.

I hope these tips help. I am now booking into February, please get in touch to organise a fun, intimate session with your family. Check out some images below from recent sessions.
